Funny Stories from a Telephone Operator

This is a picture of the Actual Switch Board my mom worked at in 1957. Yup you see my mom there, she's the 3rd from the right!

Hello and welcome to Reach Out And Touch Someone: Funny Stories of a Telephone Operator.

This section I have given to my Mother and my Aunt. Together they have over 80 years of experience in dealing with customers on all different levels of the telephone company. My mom is coming upon retirement soon and my Aunt retired a few years ago.

About a year ago my mother and I were talking about how things "used to be." I found her stories so interesting.. just as I always have. I love listening to the way people used to live back in the old days. If you take the time to listen you'll find that people older than you have some very interesting and amazing stories to tell. I could sit for hours just listening to these stories. I personally think that if more people from small children to young adults would spend time listening to stories of their elders this world would be a much better place to live. I feel it brings a closeness and helps communication and helps us understand our elders a little better. I just wish I had taken the opportunity to spend more time listening to my grandparents stories when I had the chance. I'm sure I would have been more amazed by stories of their lives even more than my mothers stories.

As I sat there and listened I thought that it would be wonderful to give her a place to write about all the people she encountered, events and changes she went through while working for the phone company. Not only would it give her space on my site so that she can participate in some of what I do, but it would also give people the opportunity to listen to her stories who may not have an older person in their life who shares stories with them. Yes, I am going to share my mom.. but don't get used to it.. the stories is all you can have from her!! hehe I'm selfish about sharing my mom too much! ....Anyways... as we talked this out she mentioned getting my Aunt involved too, as she worked for the telephone company for over 40 years as well.  I'm awaiting some stories from my Aunt, but my mom has submitted her first entry. She will try to get more out each week.
